While facial hair is natural in men and women, some people prefer to remove some or all of it. There are a variety of options available to remove facial hair at home including over-the-counter products and with tools such as razors, tweezers and epilators.

Of all the beauty treatments out there, removing facial hair is one of the least pleasant activities but it doesn’t have to be difficult as long as you choose the right method for your skin type and hair. So, if you want to get rid of that fuzz along with your hairs on the chin, upper lips or sprouts between your eyebrows here’s what you need to know about each possible way.

Techniques to Remove Unwanted Facial Hair

Hair growth depends on hormonal changes. It may be caused by genetics too. So, if you’re bothered by the hair that grows on your face, then follow the below tips-

Tweezing is an effective and inexpensive way of removing that unwanted hair on your face. Tweezers are designed to pluck or pull the hair from the roots. It is particularly useful when shaping the eyebrows.

To tweeze the facial hair, follow these steps-

  1. Before you start, wipe your face with a warm clean cloth to soften the skin.
  2. Isolate the hairs that you want to remove.
  3. While holding your skin tight, pluck one hair at a time.
  4. Always pull or pluck in the direction of hair growth.

Tweezing can be temporarily painful and can cause redness, but these sensations fade away quickly.

Threading is another technique for shaping the eyebrows and removing unwanted facial hair on the upper lip, chin and side of the face. This method uses a thread which twists and pulls the hair follicles from the root. The results last longer than shaving or tweezing.

Threading doesn’t involve chemicals, so there’s no risk of any reaction on the skin, although you may experience minor pain or discomfort while it is being removed. Threading might not be a good option if you have acne-prone skin as it causes bumps and ruptures. Also, threading requires skills so you’ll require a trained cosmetologist or esthetician.

Depilatory Creams

If you find the above methods not helpful because of sensitive skin, then consider using topical prescription creams such as e flora cream, the results of which lasts longer than tweezing and unlike threading, it is painless. It helps to reduce the growth of hair follicles on the desired areas by thinning or permanently discarding them.

If it’s your first time with depilatory cream, try a small patch of the cream for a test. Wait for at least 24 hours after a patch test before applying on the larger areas of the skin.

Here’s how you use a hair reducing cream-

  1. Apply a thin layer of the cream after 5-10 minutes of hair removal treatments like waxing, threading, or tweezing.
  2. Wait for at least 4 hours before washing the treated area.

The cream is designed especially for facial hair. Thus, it also smoothes, exfoliates and moisturizes the skin.

Epilation is another option to try out for facial hair. This technique can eliminate hair for up to 4 weeks which might be a better option if you don’t want to regularly shave or tweeze.

Epilators eliminate facial hair by grabbing multiple hairs at a time and removing them from the root. And because hairs are removed from the root, it takes longer to grow back. Often epilation results in growing thin and fine hairs. Strands may become less noticeable.

This is how you use an epilator-

  1. Hold the epilator at a 90-degree angle.
  2. Hold your skin tight. Slide the epilator in the direction of hair growth.
  3. Glide the epilator slowly to avoid breaking the hair. Don’t press it too hard against your skin.

You don’t have to prepare your skin before using an epilator. However, exfoliating before 2-3 days can soften the skin and reduce the risk of ingrown hairs.

Waxing removes unwanted hair from the face by applying hot wax on the skin and then ripping it away with wax strips. It is a very common method of removing hair from the body. A practitioner can remove hair from chin, upper lip and eyebrows with ease. But, this isn’t for everyone. Waxing causes irritation because the skin becomes sensitive to the products being applied on the surface.

People should not wax on the areas of the skin that have sunburn, warts or moles.

Waxing is an effective way of removing unwanted hair and its results last up to several weeks. But it can be more painful than the other methods above as it removes the hair from the root.

Facial hair can be annoying for many people, but getting rid of them, sounds like an easy fix. Depending upon the chosen method you can get rid of them for several days, weeks or even months. You can also consult a dermatologist for permanent hair removal through electrolysis.
